When you receive a Can’t Connect to Database error it is often a very simple issue to fix.

The back-end of Qtac is a product called Microsoft SQL Server and it usually just means something is stopping Qtac connecting to SQL. Below is some basic advice on resolving the issue.

There are a few things that can cause the ‘Can’t Connect to Database’ message. If you access the following start menu item: ‘Start‘ > ‘Control Panel‘ > ‘Administrative Tools‘ > ‘Services‘. Scroll down the list of services and find: ‘SQL Server (Qtac)’. In the Status column to the right of the name it should say ‘Started‘. It may say ‘Stopped‘ or the option is blank. If this is showing as blank or saying stopped, if you right click the ‘SQL Server (Qtac)‘ option in this list and select ‘Start‘. If this service starts then you can try opening the software.

If this still fails when trying to open up Qtac can you please open Windows Explorer (right click the ‘Start‘ button on your task bar and select ‘Explore‘) and browse to the Qtac application folder (where you have installed Qtac), once you are here can you open the file called ‘Payroll.ini‘ (it may just be called Payroll and may not have the .ini on the end – this file will open in Notepad) and make sure that the following line is correct if you have installed the software as a ‘Standalone‘ install: Datasource=(local)\QTAC

If you have installed the product as a server install then it should read:

Datasource=[YOUR COMPUTER NAME]\QTAC

Where [PC Name] is the name of the machine that QTAC is installed on.

For example:

Datasource=SERVER01\QTAC
