It is essential to backup your payroll data. Knowing how to perform a backup and restore is important.

The system will suggest you take a backup each time you close the software. We highly recommend you do this regularly. If your computer breaks and you don’t have a copy of your backup of your data then there is no other way to recover that backup. Backup regularly.

Backing up Your Payroll

You can backup by going into ‘Admin > Archive and Restore’ or by shutting the payroll application down. Clicking the ‘Archive’ button will bring up a screen asking you where you’d like to backup.

The default backup location is: ‘C:\Program Files\QTACXXXX\Backups’ (XXXX referring to the tax year, for example QTAC1112 or QTAC1213). If you have a 64bit version of Windows 7/8 it will instead be: ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\QTACXXXX\Backups’. We recommend that you put your backup file into the default backup location or backup to a secure network location.

Restoring Data

All users must be logged out of the Payroll before you can perform a restore. To perform a restore, go to ‘Admin > Archive and Restore’ choose ‘Restore’from the window that appears. You will see another warning message to make sure that everybody is logged out of the software. The QTAC program will close down in the background, but the ‘Archive and Restore’ window will remain open.

Select restore again from the window that appears. Now you will need to select the backup file that you wish to restore. The restore process will run and if any errors occur you will be notified by a message.

NOTE: The backup file that you are trying to restore will need to be located on the C: drive of the computer in order for the restore to work. Microsoft SQL cannot restore backup files from user areas or your desktop.
